WW1 HISTORY

In conjunction with the Porirua RSA a project of commemorating all men and women who called Porirua home and served in conflicts from the Boer War to modern day Peace Keeping.

Allan Dodson is researching the stories of the individuals and putting these stories on the Porirua War Stories website. To date there are 26 stories from the Boer War and 30 from World War One.

There are another 175 stories from World War One which will be completed in the next three years. One group of interest are the men from Porirua Mental Hospital who served mainly in the New Zealand Medical Corp.

Many of these were young single men from the United Kingdom who after serving with the NZEF returned to New Zealand and made it their permanent home. It was reported that of the 60 men who worked at the institution 48 enlisted (80%) a number paid the supreme price.

Then the stories of World War Two, there are 250+ names already listed to research. Allan is offering to research, at no cost, stories of anyone from the Porirua District if we can include these stories on the website.
